15	S	Antibes, France X Antibes, France Antibes was founded as a Greek trading port in the 4th century BC and is now a center for fishing and rose growing. Avenue de l' Admiral - Grasse runs along the seafront from the harbor area. A stroll along it will take you to a lively market most mornings, the Immaculate Conception Church, noteworthy for its intricately carved portals, and the St. Andre Bastion, home to the Museum of Archeology. Overlooking town is the Chateau Grimaldi, built in the 12th century and extensively rebuilt in the 16th century. Reached by steps, the terrace holds marvelous views of the sea and inside the Picasso Museum exhibits works of Picasso, who lived and worked here during one of his most cheerful and energetic periods. Nearby Cap d'Antibes peninsula is rich and residential with beaches, views and large villas hidden behind lush vegetation. At about four miles long, Ile de Porquerolles called "Prote" by the Greek colonists, is the largest of the three islands. This mostly uninhabited island of Mediterranean forests is a paradise for nature lovers, with its nature reserves, beaches, and calanques, small inlets in the rocky cliffs along the island's southern coastline. The only village on the island is the little seaside resort of Porquerolles. Ringed with alternating precipitous cliffs and fine sand beaches, the island resembles a mountain thrust up out of the water, but its ruggedness is tempered by brilliant sunlight and groves of olive and orange trees. Napoleon once said that he could recognize Corsica with his eyes closed - by its perfume alone. Today it is an important ferry terminal and for many travelers the gateway to Rome. The Renaissance fortifications that surround the harbor area were begun by Bramante and completed by Michelangelo in 1535. The port city is pleasant enough in itself with a variety of shops along the main street, a colorful market and a number of restaurants. However, true lovers of "la dolce vita" head straight for Rome, the Eternal City that forever beckons. Its beginnings are shrouded in romantic legend that attributes the city's birth to Romulus in 753 BC, although earlier traces of habitation have been found on Palantine Hill. The Etruscans made it their center first in the 6th century BC and for centuries to follow. The city built on seven hills reigned as the ancient capital of the Western World and a center of Christianity for nearly 2000 years. Rome was not built in a day - and 2,500 years of history crammed into a maze of alleys, squares and monuments cannot be seen in one day either. For a short visit there are "must sees" that combine ancient, papal and modern Rome.
