The Andaman Islands were long off limits to visitors, to protect the indigenous population. Now Port Blair welcomes the few visitors who do manage to arrive. Its history as an Indian property started as a penal colony, and the Cellular Gaol, once a notorious place, is now a historical museum with a pleasant gardens. The Anthropological Museum contains information and displays on the indigenous peoples of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
