The ruins of Carthage leave a lot to the imagination, but the scale reminds one that this was one of the great cities of antiquity, controlling the fertile grain fields of North Africa and the wealth of treasure and rare goods from the continent beyond. The Bardo Museum holds many splendors, but of particular interest are large, and remarkably complete, Roman mosaic floors. The suburban hillside village of Sidi Bou Said is a Moorish fantasy, replete with mint tea in outdoor cafes and elaborately crafted birdcages in vivid blue and white.
