A small but busy port of tin-roofed houses at the eastern end of Flores, Larantuka nestles around the base of Gunung Ili Mandiri, separated by a narrow strait from Pulau Solor and Pulau Adonara. In the 17th century, Larantuka was an interstation for the trade of sandalwood from Timor eventually becoming the Portuguese trading center of South East Indonesia, and even a place of refuge for deserters of the Dutch East India Company. Boats to the Solor Archipelago or Kupang (small islands nearby) are easily accessible at the pier.
