Lubeck-Travemunde, Germany

Overview

Travemunde is a popular yachting center on the Baltic coast of Germany. As its name implies, it is at the mouth (munde) of the Trave River. Just up river, past the flocks of swans, lies lovely Lubeck, a gem of a Hanseatic city packed with prosperous-looking reminders of the days when the Hansa League controlled trade from Norway to Turkey. The town’s Gothic brick architecture won it status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of particular note are the conical-roofed twin towers of the town gate and the majestic Marienkirche, which was bombed by an Allied air raid in 1942. Two of the church’s great bells, which plunged to the floor from the tower, remain as a memorial to the devastation. The town has been famous for centuries for its fanciful, colorful creations of animals and plants made from marzipan almond paste.
