At Bathsheba you will stop briefly to take in the striking vistas, rugged hillsides and pounding surf. Then re-board your vehicle for a drive to Cattlewash Hill, where you will enjoy a refreshing beverage as you look out over Barbados’ lovely countryside. From here, journey through Barclay’s Park, a 50-acre reserve located on the east coast of the island. Opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1966, this park commemorates the island’s independence and was a gift to the Government of Barbados from Barclays Bank. Travel past the calm waters of Long Pond and along the trail of Morgan Lewis Hill. Soon you will arrive at the striking pinnacles of Pico Tenerife. These majestic cliffs inspire awe as they endure the constant force of crashing waves. Heading along the West Coast hotel belt, you will pass through Holetown and sleepy Speightstown in the parish of St Peter, once referred to as Little Bristol due to its sugar-era buildings, many of which remain intact today. You’ll stop at St Nicholas Abbey, built in 1660 and one of only three genuine Jacobean mansions in the Western Hemisphere. Distinguishing features of this magnificent, well-preserved mansion include curved Dutch gables, chimneystacks and coral stone finials, a Chinese Chippendale staircase and fine antiques and china. Watch a rare 1930s film depicting sugar plantation life. Your guide will tell you some astonishing tales of triumph and tragedy associated with this abbey and, after touring this magnificent home, you will make your way across the plantation to see the traditional way of making rum. St Nicholas rum uses a recipe whose pedigree spans the centuries. It is made using freshly cut, handpicked sugar cane, which is crushed using a restored steam engine. Next, you will drive through a beautiful mahogany grove and be treated to a breathtaking view of the east coast. As you descend to the coastline, you will pass Morgan Lewis Windmill—one of the only two intact and restored sugar mills in the Caribbean. Beautifully maintained, the mill includes an exhibit of the equipment used to produce sugar at the time when the industry was run by wind-power. The rubble walls are comprised of boulders held together with a mixture of egg white and coral dust—there was no such thing cement when this plantation house was built. A short stop in Bathsheba will provide you with the ultimate back drop for your vacation photos before you continue your drive through sleepy village, sugar cane fields and plantations bringing you to St John’s Church. Perched on a cliff top 800 feet above sea level, the present building was constructed in 1836. The pulpit is constructed from six different kinds of wood: ebony, locust, Barbados mahogany, manchineel, oak and pine. The church also contains an interesting sculpture depicting the Madonna and Child with the infant St John. The cemetery contains the tomb of Ferdinand Paleologus—a descendent of the Byzantine Imperial family. He died in Barbados in 1678.
