This community in southern Brazil was founded by Azoreans in the 18th century, to provide a base for the whaling fleet hunting the Southern Right Whales. Today the whaling station is a museum, located on a beach just near the port, and the whales are the subject of the Southern Right Whale Conservation Center. The interesting Santa Catarina state capital city of Florianopolis is about an hour away.
