Pare Pare, Sulawesi, Indonesia

This large port in Southern Sulawesi islands is a jumping-off place to get to the highlands and the Tana Toraja: “Torajaland.” The Toraja traditionally live in distinctive houses with tall peaked facades tapered to resemble the bows of the boats their ancestors supposedly used to get to Sulawesi. Often these are adorned with the horns of buffalo, an ostentatious display of wealth. The Toraja are perhaps best known for their elaborate burial rituals, which involve interment of the deceased in cliff-side “hanging graves” and display of painted and clothed effigies of the departed in balconies attached to the same cliffs.
