Pt. Stanley, Falkland Islands

Port Stanley, Faukland Islands

About 300 miles off the coast of Argentina lay the Falkland Islands. This archipelago is comprised of two large islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, and about 700 other smaller islands spread out over approximately 4,700 square miles. The capital city of Port Stanley, located on East Falkland Island, is the islands' main commercial center and hub of the road system. The Falklands are well-known for the war that was fought here in 1982 between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the disputed Falklands, South Georgia, and the South Sandwich Islands. Beginning with Argentina's invasion and its subsequent occupation of the islands ended after 74 days, the conflict resulted in the deaths of almost 1,000 Argentine and British troops and civilians before ending with Argentina's surrender. The Falklands are a popular destination due to their interesting history, geology, ecology, and flora and fauna.
