La Spezia, Italy
|
La Spezia is a very ancient place, and much disputed by the various political powerhouses of the region over the centuries, for its fine protected harbor. Between 1945 and 1948, La Spezia was the exit point of tens of thousands of Jews relocating from Europe to Israel, earning it the nickname “Door to Zion.” Although to city itself offers a great deal of interest in terms of museums and churches, for most visitors it is the place from which to explore the picturesque UNESCO World Heritage Site of the five villages known collectively as the Cinque Terre. These tiny towns cling perilously to the steep Ligurian coast, some accessible only by foot, from the cliff-top railway line, or by boat.
