The Torres islanders are a sub-group of the Melanesians. The island is a chance to become acquainted with yet another of Australia’s native peoples. The cultural center explains it all. There is a monument to the numerous Japanese divers who lost their lives during the island’s flourishing pearl-shell boom (before “the bends” where well understood). And the Green Hill Fort reveals the island’s military history.
