Villagarcia, Spain

From this snug harbor on the coast of Galicia, we can travel about 45 kilometers through the rich agricultural countryside to Santiago de Compostela, one of Europe’s most important Christian pilgrimage sites. Since the 9th century, and even to today, thousands of devout pilgrims walk the Way of St. James to the towering cathedral where St. James is entombed. Inside the cathedral, at assigned times, a team of eight men fill, ignite and then swing an immense botafumeiro censer in long arcs that spew smoke of frankincense throughout the church. The old town around the cathedral form a pleasant square, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where groups of student musicians and singers serenade the visitors.
