Embark on a captivating journey to Kuji, a city renowned for its rich geological history and vibrant maritime culture. This tour invites you to explore the unique treasures of the Sanriku region, starting with a visit to the Kuji Amber Museum, the only facility in Japan dedicated entirely to amber. Kuji’s amber dates back approximately 90 million years to the late Cretaceous period—the age of dinosaurs. At the museum, you will learn how this transparent, golden gemstone was formed. You’ll have the opportunity to marvel at exquisite amber crafts and even discover ancient insect fossils trapped within, much like the scenes from Jurassic Park.
Following lunch, you will head to the Moguranpia Aquarium. This unique facility is built into the tunnels of an underground oil storage base, creating an atmosphere unlike any other aquarium. The highlight of your visit will be the spectacular performance by Ama—traditional female divers. Dressed in traditional clothe, skilled diver plunge into the water without modern equipment to showcase techniques that have been passed down for generations. You will be amazed by their breath control and agility as they interact with marine life in a tank that perfectly replicates the local Sanriku coastal environment.
