Unwind in the tranquil setting of two of Matsuyama's most peaceful sites.
This half-day adventure begins with a dip in the calming waters of Dogo Onsen — said to be the oldest and most famous hot spring baths in Japan, with a history stretching back more than a thousand years. Walk to the Asuka-no-Yu — the relatively new bathhouse built in the architectural style of ancient times. The facility features spacious public bathing areas and relaxing lounge spaces where visitors can unwind after bathing.
Afterward, rejoin your coach and head to the Ishite-ji Temple. This sprawling Buddhist compound boasts a three-storied pagoda, various statues, and an inner temple connected to the main grounds via a cave. This is a well-known temple in Matsuyama, and it sits on the 1,100-year-old Shikoku Pilgrimage Route. Check out the Niomon Gate — designated a National Treasure — and the main hall and pagoda, which are designated Important Cultural Properties. Legend holds that touching either of the two giant straw sandals will cure any leg ailments.
Please note: The floor of the bathing area may be slippery; participate at your own risk. Japanese hot springs are enjoyed without swimwear; swimsuits and clothing are not permitted in the bathing areas. Guests with tattoos will be restricted from using the hot spring facilities unless tattoos can be fully covered with medical taping or similar. This tour is not suitable for guests who have a chronic illness or have had any history of heart disease. This tour includes rental use only of a bath towel and face towel. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse. Tour sequence may vary.
