Those with a passion for chocolate, nougat, lollipops, or honeycomb have found their nirvana on this tour to Margaret River. Some of the country's most significant wines, artisan cheeses, gourmet foods, and fabulous sweet treats hail from this area of international renown.
Tucked between the vineyards is the town of Yallingup — the home of Gabriel Chocolate. Western Australia's first bean-to-bar chocolate maker invites you to sample some artisan treats. Gabriel Chocolate purchases raw cacao from places as far away as Sambirano, Ghana, and Rio Caribe, sorting the cacao by hand and roasting it, tempering the cocoa, and making chocolate from scratch on the premises. You may wish to purchase a decadent hot chocolate beverage, salted chocolate chip cookies or hand-made, chocolate-dipped ice creams (at your own expense). Next door, the Gabriel Café sells baked goods, chocolate drinks, and coffee.
Back on the coach, you'll travel inland to the quaint town of Cowaramup, named by the Aboriginal people after the purple-crowned Cowara lorikeet that once inhabited the area. A timber town in the 1930s, Cowaramup is today known for its local wineries, cheesemakers, and confectioners, such as the Margaret River Nougat Company. The nougat store features 22 nougat flavor combinations. Watch how it's made through the viewing window in the Sample Room.
For delicious fudge, creamy chocolates, and honeycomb, head to The Candy Cow. Honey crunch is an Australian favorite made with sugar, honey and syrup. It's even better than it sounds! You'll also find fine tea and coffee, as well as a diverse variety of Australian and international candies and chocolates available for purchase here.
Head back to the ship in Busselton with your hoard quietly stashed in your pockets, hat, and backpack. Suitcases are a step too far…
