Embark on a compelling journey through the heart of Montserrat, where the imposing Soufriere Hills Volcano shapes the landscape and the lives of its inhabitants.
A scenic 20-minute drive brings you to the Montserrat Volcano Observatory -- the nerve center tasked with monitoring this formidable natural force around the clock. You'll gain firsthand insights into the Observatory's vital efforts and learn why the Soufriere Hills Volcano holds the distinction of being the most closely-monitored volcano in the world. A documentary film provides a chilling narrative of the volcano's most active phases and a deeper understanding of its impact on the country and its people.
Continuing your journey, you'll arrive at the haunting ruins of Plymouth -- Montserrat's once-vibrant capital. Known as the Buried City, Plymouth now lies entombed beneath 40 feet of volcanic ash, frozen in time since the eruption. Traverse the eerie streets alongside your knowledgeable driver-guide, who will point out former places of interest and share tales of Plymouth's pre-eruption heyday. Despite its current state, you'll peer into a time when this city thrived, boasting a lifestyle that was ahead of its time among Caribbean islands.
Please note: Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or electric scooters or for those with mobility limitations. Wheelchairs, scooters and other mobility devices cannot be carried on the transportation. Guests must climb approximately 20 steps to access the Observatory and it is not accessible. Soufriere Hills Volcano is an active volcano. Participate at your own risk. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
