Anglesey is a wonderful place to see sea birds! On Holy Island, off the coast of Anglesey, discover the wonderful South Stack RSPB Reserve. The area is comprised of heathland and farmland on a stretch of beautiful, dramatic sea cliffs.
South Stack RSPB Reserve is an important nesting site for seabirds and the number of sea birds that nest on the cliffs here is very impressive; about 9,000 including Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills along with Shags, Kittiwakes and Fulmars. Please be aware by the end of July most will have left the reserve.
South Stack is also one of the best places to see the Chough. The Chough (pronounced chuff) is the rarest member of the crow family in the British Isles and can be seen swooping along the cliffs all year round. An important conservation project is currently underway at the reserve to allow Choughs to breed. There are about 10 pairs being monitored and encouraged to nest in the heathland that provides a perfect nesting and feeding habitat for them.
Other birds that might be seen throughout the year at South Stack are Peregrine Falcons. Smaller birds at the reserve are a source of food for them and one or two pairs nest at South Stack each year.
In summer, the heathland, part of the largest maritime heath in North Wales, has an abundance of plant species including the Spotted Rock Rose, Anglesey’s County flower and the Spathulate Fleawort, endemic to Anglesey.
Amongst the colorful wildflowers you may see the rare silver-studded blue butterfly or even a basking adder, whilst out to sea you may be lucky enough to catch glimpses of porpoises and dolphins.
Your South Stack expert, a member of the RSPB, will guide and help you identify birds and wildlife of interest at the reserve. After the guided walk take some time to explore independently.
At the visitors’ center you can find information about the reserve and binoculars and telescopes are available for sighting.
