Depart Kirkwall and head into the west of Mainland, Orkney's largest island. Pass through gentle, rolling landscape and into the Neolithic Heartland of Orkney, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Passing the Standing Stones of Stenness, you'll stop at the Ring of Brodgar — a huge ceremonial circle of stones dating back almost 5000 years. Explore this ancient monument and admire the surrounding landscape.
Continue to the pretty fishing village of Stromness, with free time to explore the picturesque harbor and the quirky flagstone streets. Visit the beautifully refurbished Pier Arts Centre, exhibiting work by both local and international artists. Nearby, craft shops selling local knitwear, pottery and paintings.
The tour's circular route follows the coastline of Scapa Flow — a natural harbor that became a renowned British naval base during both World Wars. Ask your guide to share its fantastic backstory.
