This spectacular hiking tour leaves from the center of Siglufjörður, a picturesque town that achieved its fame from being “the place” to be in the 20th century during the great herring days of Iceland when it became one of its largest towns.
Your destination will be the charming Hvanneyrarskál Valley which offers wonderful views into town and across the fjord and even though the trip has an elevation gain of about 200 meters (650 ft) and is about 5 km return (3 miles) the pace will be manageable with a lot of stops along the way.
In Hvanneyrarskál Valley your guide will discuss the history of the town, interesting flora and fauna, the purpose of avalanche guards and many other interesting subjects.
Please note: Terrain includes rough and uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel and rocks. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes or hiking boots. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer even on a fine day; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with a heart condition or mobility limitations. Construction work is ongoing in the mountains above Siglufjörður and therefore the route may be adapted around this, in the event of this an equivalent hike of similar length and difficulty will be completed instead.
