Next-level wildlife viewing takes place at the Orangutan Island Sanctuary. This remarkable conservation haven features endangered primates up close in their natural habitat. It's not just about enjoying the orangutans' crazy antics; it's also about learning a thing or two from the scientific research surrounding conservation of this remarkable species.
Head across the iconic Penang Bridge to mainland Malaysia. With breathtaking views of the island, it stands as a symbol of Penang's growth and development.
Your destination is Bukit Merah — a water theme park surrounded by a tranquil 7,000-acre lake. This great expanse of water is dotted with small islands, one of which is the Orangutan Island Sanctuary.
A short boat ride brings you to the island that serves as a breeding sanctuary and also as a rehabilitation and conservation facility for this endangered species. Step ashore and enter the 328-foot-long protective enclosure that allows you to view the orangutans up close. The animals roam freely outside of the enclosure, enjoying their limitless natural habitat. You'll see them swinging about in the trees, lollygagging at ground level, or napping quietly to refresh for their next treetop adventure.
Learn about these apes and their behaviors during a humbling walk that cages the humans rather than the animals. It is wonderful to see these beautiful, opinionated creatures living out their happy lives on the island from such an unusual perspective.
Afterward, you'll take the boat back to the Bukit Merah Pier and drive back to Penang.
