Step ashore with the Expedition team in the Îles du Salut (the Salvation Islands) — a rare opportunity indeed, as visitors are permitted only on Île Royale and Île St Joseph. Your knowledgeable Expedition team will share the history and natural history of the islands with you as you explore.
A system of dirt pathways loops around each island, where monkeys, agoutis, and other introduced mammals make their homes.
The prison ruins on St Joseph are perfectly isolated from the mainland, surrounded by shark-infested waters, and zealously guarded by dense, dark jungle. Here, what you see is only one part of the story; what you sense is a backstory of immense suffering, injustice, and all-pervasive isolation perfectly offset by today's inviting and fascinating landscape.
Please note: Included Expeditions cannot be booked in advance. The ship's Expedition team will communicate finalized content and departure information. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Bring insect repellent. The local currency is euros. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
