Today's walking tour of Zadar's Old Town begins on the pier. A short distance away, you will discover the heart of this magnificent district.
First you will visit the Cathedral of St. Anastasia – the finest example of Romanesque architecture in Zadar and which has a notable W façade dating back to 1324. St. Anastasia's stone sarcophagus is in the apse to the left of the high altar.
As you continue, watch for the Church of St. Donatus, believed to have been built on Roman foundations at the beginning of the 9th century. This is most important church in the eastern Adriatic, with a circular plan and three naves.
At the eastern end of the Forum is the 16th-century St. Mary's Church with a Romanesque bell tower. Check out the upper floor of the convent, whose rooms contain a collection of goldsmith's work, relics, and other valuable items.
Your tour concludes with a short refreshment stop in the Old Town of Zadar, featuring a glass of wine and a glass of Maraschino liqueur, served with a selection of cheese and light local accompaniments. The traditional production of Maraschino liqueur in Zadar dates back almost 400 years, and this iconic spirit has long been appreciated across Europe, including in royal households. The tour ends at the tavern, so you're free to explore further on your own if you wish.
