A short drive will bring you to Herjolfsdalur valley, where ruins of old Viking houses dating back to the year 900 AD can be seen. Continue on this scenic drive to Cape Storhofdi (Great Cape) to enjoy magnificent views over the island and majestic glaciers of the Icelandic mainland.
You will pass through the town of Skansinn and see the wooden church donated to the people of the Westman Islands by the state of Norway to commemorate the millennium of Christianity in Iceland. Finally, a special reception welcomes you to the Eldheimar Museum. The museum is built around the remains of one of the homes impacted by the volcanic eruption in 1973.
Please note: Weather in Iceland is unpredictable and views at some sites are weather permitting. It is recommended to wear sturdy, comfortable footwear and waterproof outerwear. Binoculars are recommended should you wish to get a closer look at the local bird life on the Heimaey cliffs.
