Discover the timeless charm of County Cork, a region renowned for its rich cultural heritage and more than 4,000 years of history. Rolling countryside, storied landmarks, and enduring traditions create an evocative introduction to Ireland's southern coast.
A short drive brings you to the iconic Blarney Castle, one of Ireland's most celebrated historic sites. During your visit, you may choose to kiss the legendary Blarney Stone, set high within the castle battlements. According to tradition, the stone bestows the gift of eloquence upon those who kiss it. You must lean backward from the parapet walk (held by the strong arms of a couple of Irish gentlemen) in order to do so.
Surrounding the castle are the remarkable 18th-century gardens, including the atmospheric "Rock Close," believed to occupy an ancient Druid site, with dramatic natural stone formations and sacred landmarks.
Stop at the Blarney Woolen Mill (1793) to browse through a wide range of Irish clothing, crystal, linen and handicrafts. Enjoy an Irish coffee before you return to Kinsale.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Guests with physical limitations or a fear of heights can skip kissing the Blarney Stone. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, gravel, grass, and 108 steps on a narrow spiral staircase to reach the stone. There can be long lines and a significant wait to kiss the Blarney Stone; patience is required, and time constraints may preclude all guests from participating. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars.
