Your coach will follow the road leading to the western side of the island traveling through the historic Ladder Hill Fort and the arid Half Tree Hollow. Continue to the top of the hill onto High Knoll Fort, and leave the bus for a five-minute walk to the High Knoll Gate. The Director of the National Trust will meet you here, and will offer you a guided tour of the fort. The impressive fort offers spectacular views over the island and boasts an interesting history from the days that it was built as a safe haven for islanders through to recent times when it has hosted concerts and played a key role in international and local communications. The guided tour lasts around 45 minutes and there will be an opportunity to enjoy the views and take photographs. Next, head to Plantation House, the official residence of the island’s governor. Inside the grounds, don’t miss meeting the oldest inhabitant of St. Helena, Jonathan the tortoise. He is more than 180 years old and is a real celebrity on the island. On the way back down the hill, you’ll stop to photograph a panoramic bird’s-eye view of the harbor and Jamestown from the top of Jacob’s Ladder. This staircase features 699 steps up (or down) a 600-foot cliff. It’s not for the faint of heart!
