Bordering the southern shore of Lake Chapo between the Reloncavi Sound and Estuary, you'll find Alerce Andino National Park. Half of its nearly 97,850 acres are completely covered by dense forests featuring alerces (Chilean redwood trees) and other varieties of typical evergreen forest, such as the coigue and the manio. In addition to these green giants, the park includes an enormous mountain massif, deep valleys and more than 30 lagoons, plus unmatched views of Lake Chapo and the Chaicas and Lenca River Valleys.
You may even be lucky enough to see the park's fauna residents, which include the elusive pudu (a small Chilean deer), pumas, and the adorable little mountain monkeys -- these are in fact small marsupials native to southern Chile.
Please note:
Participants must be in good physical condition and be able to walk over uneven terrain for several hours. Bring a backpack with water, windbreaker, sunscreen and hat. Dress warmly in layers; wear sturdy hiking shoes. A light boxed lunch is included.
