Departing Papeete, this tour takes you along the West Coast of the island of Tahiti.
Visit the most interesting Museum of Tahiti & Her Islands, located on La Pointe des Pecheurs (Fishermen's Point). Permanent exhibits here include a number of archeological finds, but you will also be able to form an impression of the islands' geology, flora and fauna, culture and customs.
Lunch is served at Le Coco's Restaurant -- a deluxe location by the shoreline with a fine view and delicious cuisine.
This afternoon, visit the Arahurahu marae, situated in a beautiful valley. It is a short walk to this sacred place, which served both religious and social purposes in pre-Christian Polynesian societies.
Continue down to the south of the island, passing the steep coastline en route to a private residence. The home was originally built by former missionary and English novelist Robert Keabel in the late 1920s. The present owners will welcome you for a guided visit to the splendid gardens and treat you to a refreshment. The interior of the house is not included in your visit; however, you will be able to view the British interior design style from the verandah.
After a relaxing drive along the abrupt east coast, you'll stop at Venus Point. This was the historic landing site for all the European explorers, including Captain Bligh in 1788 and the first Protestant missionaries in 1797. It boasts the 110-foot-tall white lighthouse built in 1867, which is still operational.
Your last stop is at the James Norman Hall House. The home displays the daily environment, frozen in time, of the poet and writer of American contemporary literature.
Please note:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. This tour is available only to guests whose cruise does not begin or end in Papeete.
