Head south from La Possession along the scenic Tamarind Road to St Pierre. From here, your journey continues up into the mountains to an elevation of 6,000 feet.
At Nez le Boeuf, take in the breathtaking views of the volcanic ravine and the green countryside bedecked with colorful flowers.
Your next stop is the Plaine des Sables, set in the middle of an impressive mars-like landscape of red lava rocks and ravines. A short distance away is the volcanic crater of Pas de Bellecombe. Look down into the active crater of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano, mysteriously veiled by clouds, for a spectacular panorama. Visibility depends upon weather conditions.
In one of the villages at the base of the volcano, you'll sit down to a typical Creole lunch and fully appreciate the fine flavors of Réunion.
After lunch, you will visit the Cité du Volcan Museum, which espouses a modern approach to vulcanology, using the latest technological equipment. A replica lava tunnel shows how the island was formed from underwater volcanic eruptions three million years ago.
Head back to the ship in the late afternoon.
Please note: Tour requires approximately one hour of walking, mostly over paved surfaces. The visibility at the volcano locations is weather dependent. The mountain drive includes a number of hairpin bends. Not suitable for those who suffer from vertigo or have difficulties at high elevations. The route is winding. Guests who are prone to motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication. Bring a light jacket as temperatures at higher elevations can be quite cool.
