Your first stop is at the Axel Strenross Maritime Museum, where you will learn about the early days of the tuna fishing industry. Filled with maritime history, relics and artifacts, the museum has indoor and outdoor displays, including an operating slipway, historic vessels and a blacksmith’s shop.
Next, take a look at the local marina – home to the largest commercial fishing fleet in Australia.
A seafood-lovers’ tour of a fish-processing factory follows. From oysters to fish filleting, you will see how the local marine life is processed and made ready for sale. Learn how to shuck an oyster, peel a prawn like a pro, and how the famous King George whiting is filleted at high speed. You’ll also taste the in-house smoked fish and pickled seafood.
