Step into the imaginative world of Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Maori Art Gallery and enjoy an intimate, hands-on artistic experience inspired by nature. This remarkable venue celebrates the legacy of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the renowned artist, ecologist and visionary whose work championed creativity, individuality and harmony with the natural environment.
Guided by experienced art facilitators, discover how colours can be created from earth pigments, charcoal and other natural materials. Learn about the traditional Maori use of natural pigments and the stories, meanings and cultural connections associated with them. Through experimentation and exploration, create your own unique artwork to take home.
Much like Hundertwasser's own approach to art, this experience embraces curiosity and discovery. Working with natural and plant-based pigments often produces unexpected results, encouraging participants to engage with the creative process rather than focus solely on the finished piece. Along the way, gain a fresh appreciation for colour, its origins, how we perceive it and the value we attach to it.
Blending art, culture and sustainability, this enriching workshop offers a thoughtful and sensory introduction to creativity while providing a memorable connection to the philosophies that inspired one of New Zealand's most distinctive cultural attractions.
