Step into a world where creativity knows no boundaries at the Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Maori Art Gallery, home to the definitive collection of works by the visionary artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Austrian-born and later a resident of New Zealand, Hundertwasser was renowned not only as a painter, but also as an architect, ecological advocate and philosopher whose ideas challenged conventional thinking and celebrated harmony with nature.
Accompanied by a knowledgeable docent guide, hear stories of Hundertwasser’s free-spirited life and the symbolism behind his art. His distinctive style is immediately recognizable through flowing forms, organic shapes, vibrant colours and spirals, all reflecting his belief that nature should inspire the built environment and artistic expression alike.
The experience also includes time to explore the Wairau Maori Art Gallery, where contemporary works by leading Maori artists provide a compelling cultural perspective. Guests may notice interesting connections between the bold visual language of Maori art and Hundertwasser’s own creative approach.
Please note:
> The Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Maori Art Gallery is fully accessible. Due to the nature-inspired design of the building, some floor surfaces may be uneven. Elevators and ramps are available for guests who prefer not to use stairs between levels.
