The Makino Botanical Garden in Kochi opened in 1958 to honor the remarkable achievements of local botanist Tomitaro Makino. Today it's your turn to view this comprehensive, relaxing beauty. The garden exhibits more than 3,000 plant species, including many native or endemic to Kochi. Admire Japan's four seasons as your guide points out the highlights of each and provides tips on how best to enjoy your free time here.
Chikurin-ji Temple, located on Mt Godai and surrounded by abundant nature, boasts a five-storey pagoda. The main hall and garden are set on historic grounds that date back to the Kamakura period. Meet the priest here and allow yourself to leave your cares at the door as you experience a meditation class. The priest will explain the process, its purpose, and key points to keep in mind. Feel the hum of nature, hear the soothing sounds of the outdoors, and immerse yourself in this peaceful experience.
Please note: Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Wear closed-toe walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s). Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Tour sequence may vary. Bring local currency, as most vendors do not accept US dollars or credit cards. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking. Tour requires approximately one hour of walking. Terrain includes several steps at the garden and approximately 70 steps at the Chikurinji Temple. Participants must sit on the floor for the meditation experience. If the priest is not available, his assistant will lead the meditation. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse.
