This tour takes you through Niigata’s traditions, crafts, food culture, and historical landmarks all in one day.
Niigata is the only region in Japan where traditional tsuiki copperware is made, using hammered copper sheets to create three-dimensional items such as kettles and tea canisters. Gyokusendo is one of the few workshops producing this art form and is highly regarded for its traditional techniques. Step inside to see the artisans at work -- a truly awe-inspiring experience.
Next, enjoy a lunch of fresh, locally sourced ingredients served on metal tableware from the Tsubame-Sanjo area.
The famous knife-making factory in Niigata is renowned for its long history of craftsmanship passed down through generations. Observe the meticulous process of creating sharp blades -- a product of precision workmanship and high-quality materials. Handle some of the finished products -- they are works of art.
Yahiko Shrine boasts a history of more than 2,400 years and is a place of deep reverence for the local people. The surrounding nature is beautiful; enjoy its peaceful atmosphere before you return to the port.
Please note:
The workshops are working facilities; space is limited and can feel a little crowded. The gallery of Gyokusendo is a tatami room featuring traditional Japanese floor seating. You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s). Guests who have consumed alcohol prior to the tour are not permitted to join. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Tour sequence may vary. Bring local currency for purchases, as few stores accept credit cards. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. Traffic can be unpredictable; your patience is greatly appreciated if a delay extends the tour duration.
