Calling all hikers, adventurers, nature enthusiasts and fit photographers; set your sights and camera on the unspoiled beauty of Gibraltar's environs. This very energetic hike takes you literally off the beaten track and up the side of the Rock of Gibraltar. It is a challenging excursion with three hours devoted to ascending and descending the Rock over a very steep path.
Your exhilarating adventure begins with a short journey from the pier to Jews Gate — the Upper Rock entrance to the Nature Reserve. Here, meet your specialist guide. The Mediterranean Steps were created by the British military to connect certain defense points. During your climb, your guide will point out the gun placements, gun batteries and old military bunkers that date back to World War II.
This area of the Rock is also known for its prehistory. Tucked among the steps are a series of caves that date back to the Neanderthal period.
Please note: Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, etc) cannot be accommodated on the transportation. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the walk is uphill and downhill, over rough walking tracks and steps. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones/flagstones, steep inclines, gravel, grass, narrow paths, and hundreds of steps. Participants must have a good level of fitness, as the hike is strenuous. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Sandals and high heels are not allowed; you must wear sturdy closed-toe walking or hiking shoes.
