The impressive remains of the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum and their associated villas, buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, and progressively excavated since, provide a complete and vivid picture of daily life at a specific moment in the past that is without parallel anywhere in the world.
On this memorable visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site ruins of Herculaneum, you will discover life as it was just prior to the monumental eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. A 1.5-hour drive brings you to the ruins, where you will begin your guided walking tour.
Herculaneum was entombed by a flood of mud that left the city virtually intact. You will see the marble floors, mosaics, paintings, and carbonized woods found in excellent condition once they were unearthed. Explore the quiet streets of this ancient city as you learn what life was like for its residents. Sights seen may include a wine merchant's store with its storage jars still lined up, the bakery and the town's many beautiful homes. Herculaneum provides a vivid impression of life during the first century.
Reboard the coach for the 1.5-hour drive back to Sorrento and visit a woodcraft center.
Guests who wish to stay in town to shop or explore on their own are welcome to do so but must return to the ship on their own.
