Board a coach on the pier and set out on a Viking raid of your very own.
Driving to the town of Hobro, you're headed to one of the oldest of the Viking ring-fortresses in Denmark. It was built around AD 980 by Danish King Harald Bluetooth. The fortress, designed in a circle with four gates, sits on a strategic inlet. In peacetime, the fortress was more of a village in which warriors, craftsmen, women and children lived and worked. This site was excavated in the 1950s, and the earthworks, walkways and foundation outlines were re-established, giving you a wonderful sense of the scale and importance of the fortress. A Viking longhouse replica situated outside the earthworks showcases life in the Middle Ages.
Nearby, a re-creation of a Viking farmstead depicts everyday life for Viking farmers of that period. The farm is a reconstruction of an actual farm found near Jelling — the hometown of Harald Bluetooth. At the farm, enjoy mjød (mead) — a sweet Viking drink made of honey.
Continue your adventure at the ancient Viking site of Lindholm Høje, where you will be treated to a Viking-inspired lunch plate with many delicious local specialties. Your lunch includes locally caught salmon, shrimps and delicatessens from the local butcher. This is meal that may have been enjoyed by the Vikings but definitely upgraded with a twist.
After lunch, discover one of the most important and best-preserved ancient monuments in Scandinavia. Lindholm Høje dates back to the late Iron Age and the Viking era. Dug out from a thick layer of sand, it has kept its secrets close for hundreds of years. Your guided Viking experience will begin with a short walk to a burial site scattered across a hilltop, with a beautiful view of the fjord. Take in the spectacular sight of the 700 graves in stone settings — something far beyond the ordinary. Hear about the fascinating history of the tombstones, making it easy to envisage the Vikings' past.
Visit the on-site museum, which features a fascinating exhibit on the Viking settlements near the burial ground, before you return to the ship.
