Join the Bute Forest Heritage Coordinator and the Argyll Countryside Trust Rainforest Manager for a private guided walk through Balnakailly, Bute’s last remaining rainforest. Accessible only on foot, this remote, community-owned site offers a rare opportunity to explore an ancient oak woodland dating back to at least the 1500s. As you journey through the heart of this biodiverse forest, a local rainforest expert will point out the lichens and bryophytes that characterize this rare ecosystem.
The route passes the atmospheric ruins of a former farm steading, where collaboration with Archaeology Scotland is uncovering stories of historic settlement. Panoramic views across the Kyles provide the backdrop for discussion on landscape-scale restoration, including the effects of the 2025 Bute forest fire and the woodland’s recovery. The walk also includes a visit to a Second World War bunker, once part of an Operation Starfish decoy site and now repurposed as the Balnakailly Art Bunker Community Project, adding a compelling cultural dimension to the experience.
Please note:
This is a strenuous walking tour covering approximately 3.1 miles (5 km) on woodland paths and uneven forest terrain that may be muddy or slippery, with exposed roots, rocky sections, and gentle to moderate gradients. There are no toilets, refreshments, shops, or water refill stations available, and the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users or guests with limited mobility. Sturdy walking boots and warm, layered, waterproof clothing appropriate to the weather are essential. This experience is recommended for experienced walkers only. A donation for the Argyll Countryside Trust Rainforest is included.
