Your adventure begins with a drive across the Sandnessund Bridge to mountainous Whale Island.
Your destination is a wilderness camp — a working kennel of Alaska husky dogs. This is your chance to learn all about the lives of man's best friend. You'll see how the animals are cared for, trained, and fed. Alaska huskies are the most efficient sled dogs on the planet and are a mix of various breeds. They are bred for their physical stamina, intelligence and their love of life in the traces.
Meet the dogs, who have been on expeditions and races all over the Arctic, including the North Pole, running distances up to 621 miles in the Finnmarksløpet — Europe's longest sled-dog race.
Tromsø is the starting point for many Arctic expeditions, earning it its Gateway to the Arctic moniker, so you will visit the Polaria information and adventure center. The center focuses on the polar regions — even the building itself stands out from the surrounding architecture, as it resembles blocks of ice sliding into the ocean. Peek into polar bear dens and walk beneath an aquarium where fish and seals swim overhead.
A specially-designed cinema shows two beautiful panoramic films on a 69-foot-wide screen.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. You may get dirty when petting the dogs; wear clothing that is readily washable.
