Garibaldi Glacier is one of several glaciers at the head of Garibaldi Fjord. It is a magnificent example of a tidewater glacier — the kind whose terminus is at the sea. Tidewater glaciers tend to be quite active, calving great chunks of ice into the surrounding saltwater ecosystem. This activity is seldom discreet; instead, it is accompanied by thunderous self-applause as a slab dramatically breaks away, crashing headlong into the sea to form icebergs large and small. The towering walls of the fjord are laced with waterfalls, and the surrounding mountains gasp in awe at their own beauty.
Alberto de Agostini National Park — the third-largest park in Chile and a designated Biosphere Reserve — is home to an extensive ice field. It is from this frozen mass that Garibaldi Glacier stems — a ten-mile-long finger inching icily toward the Beagle Channel.
