Depart the pier on a local riverboat to cruise down the Rio Negro. En route, you'll pass by Native houses built on stilts, local wharves, floating gas stations and an ice factory, before arriving at the birthplace of the mighty Amazon River. This is where the Rio Negro merges with the Rio Solimoes. Watch the phenomenon of two rivers meeting, without their differently colored waters mixing. For miles and miles they flow side by side.
Then, continue to Lake January -- an ecological park, situated between the two rivers. Board a smaller boat with an outboard motor for a ride through the small tributaries and flooded creeks for an up-close look at the Amazon rain forest.
You will then re-board the riverboat for the ride back to the pier.
Please note: The water level in the Amazon basin fluctuates seasonally. Occasionally, some tours that involve these waterways may be rescheduled or modified at very short notice. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair. Bring sunscreen, insect repellent and a hat. The rainy season in the Amazon extends from December through March. Bring a light waterproof outer layer on tour with you. Your guide will do his/her best to speak English, but please keep in mind that the limited tourism infrastructure of Manaus is part of the city's charm, and bear with any language difficulties (s)he may encounter.
