Welcome to the exotic culture of Papua New Guinea and learn what it really means to step back in time in a place where the worries of the world fade and the magic of nature unfolds.
Tawali Resort may well be Papua New Guinea's best-kept secret. A coach journey of about 90 minutes brings you to a volcanic bluff overlooking the clear, protected waters of Milne Bay. Tawali offers travelers a special location in which to snorkel, relax and enjoy the unspoiled wonders of this magnificent part of the world.
The darker side of Milne Bay's history is revealed in a visit to the Skull Cave. Hop into a dinghy for a short ride from Tawali Resort. You'll come ashore at a local village and take a 15-minute walk along the magical shoreline to a series of limestone caves. Walk down into the caves, following in the footsteps of the villagers' ancestors. In the cave, a collection of skulls has created a considerable amount of conjecture. Cannibalism? Head-hunting? Necropolis? You be the judge.
When you emerge from the cave, the local villagers will be offering you a chance to purchase some of their handicrafts. If you can find something you like, you'll be boosting the local economy, and the prices are right.
Return to the resort for a light lunch.
This afternoon, let the snorkeling begin. Papua New Guinea is located in the Coral Triangle, so named for its staggering number of coral species and dense, yet diverse, number of fish species and other marine life.
The guided tour to the House reef site is best done in two separate snorkels, one from each wharf of Tawali resort
After your snorkel experience, you'll have time back at the resort. You can take a dip in the pool, sit out on the deck and take in the beautiful view, or swim and snorkel from the beach.
