Shakes Canoe is a great introduction to canoeing combined with a cultural destination. The lead guide is a Tlingit retired school teacher, who canoed from Seattle to Wrangell in his younger days and continues to paddle in Southeast Alaska and Canada on annual adventures.
After a brief introduction and fitting of life jackets, board a two-man 17-foot canoe at the pier for a 30-minute paddle across Wrangell's harbor to the Shakes Tribal House. Landing at the ramp, you'll be greeted by local tribe members. They will grant you passage to Shakes Tribal House, where they have prepared a presentation on the history and cultural attributes of the Wrangell Tlingit. You are encouraged to ask questions.
After the presentation, hop back into your canoe and paddle back to the pier.
Please note:
Maximum weight is 300 lbs. The canoeing is designed for novices but experienced canoeists will enjoy it also. Participants must be able to negotiate the canoe boat ramp, which is steep when the tide is out. There is a paved parking lot and walkway to the Shakes Tribal House Please. Dress warmly in layers. Bring a hat, gloves, scarf and rain gear (including waterproof pants if you have them).
