Head off the beaten track, starting with a 20-minute panoramic drive to the end of Kodiak's road system.
Set out on one of the island's most scenic hikes from White Sands Beach, taking in rugged views and keeping an eye out for bear, fox, and deer tracks along the shoreline, and for eagles up above.
Follow your guide into the rainforest and fall in love with the thick, vibrant moss that carpets everything, up to a foot deep. Time stands still as you savor and explore the mossy trail. Learn how Sitka spruce covers the northern tip of the island and has yet to migrate south. Climb the steep but rewarding coastal cliffs for the best view in Kodiak and descend to a remote secret beach to find voles playing in the logs or sea otters basking offshore.
Enjoy a gourmet seafood/charcuterie picnic on a remote beach (weather permitting), or save your treats for the local brewery/distillery back in town. Either way, your picnic pays homage to the vibrant seafood industry that is the island's lifeblood.
Celebrate the end of your perfect hike with a local brew or local spirit.
