Today's spiritual journey begins with a visit to Kumano Hayatama Taisha, one of the three grand shrines of the Kumano Kodo. Located at the mouth of the Kumano River, this shrine has been a place of worship for centuries. Wander through the serene, forested grounds and admire the striking vermilion-lacquered architecture, offering a glimpse into Japan's deep-rooted spiritual traditions.
Next, marvel at the breathtaking Nachi Falls (Nachi no Taki) — the tallest continuous waterfall in Japan and recognized as a natural deity since ancient times.
Shift gears for a lively culinary experience at the Katsuura Nigiwai Market. Located in the bustling port town of Katsuura, known for its exceptional tuna catches, this vibrant market offers a true taste of local coastal life. Here, you will watch a spectacular tuna cutting show (maguro no kaitai show), where a massive, freshly caught tuna is skillfully carved before your eyes. Then, try a small sample of incredibly fresh, melt-in-your-mouth tuna sushi — a highlight for any seafood lover!
Finally, enjoy a relaxing return drive to the pier.
Please note: Wear sturdy, closed-toe, non-skid walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. This is an active tour. Terrain includes uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel, more than 150 steps up and down, and cobblestones that can be very slippery when wet. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, strollers, scooters, etc) cannot be accommodated on the transportation. Tour sequence may vary. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information. The tuna show and tasting operates conditions permitting. Bring local currency, as most vendors do not accept US dollars or credit cards.
