The small coastal town of Kaikoura is renowned for its stunning beauty, where the snow-capped Seaward Kaikoura Range meets the Pacific Ocean. Famed for its abundant marine life and captivating landscapes, a peninsula discovery walk is the perfect way to make your visit exciting and unforgettable.
Your adventure begins with a guided walking tour that departs from the South Bay Marina. Nearby, you will discover evidence of early Maori settlement. You'll also see the effects of the 7.8 earthquake that struck Kaikoura in 2016 and appreciate other distinctive features of the Kaikoura area, including the dramatic uplift that reshaped parts of the coastline.
Next, follow your guide to a grove of native trees in the expansive gardens of the Fifeshire homestead. Take in the stunning 360-degree views from this charming historic residence.
A short stop is included for a delicious Devonshire tea snack (scones with cream and jam and tea or coffee) while enjoying panoramic outlook over the bay and mountains.
Back in the great outdoors, walk along the coastline to Point Kean. This is where New Zealand fur seals congregate, and you will likely see many -- a great photo opportunity, as these playful mammals like to lollygag on the rocks. Your guide will also highlight key features of the Kaikoura Peninsula’s unique marine and birdlife along the way.
Return to South Bay Marina by coach with a short stop en route to view Fyffe House. Offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, this is Kaikoura's oldest surviving building -- a remnant of the pioneer whaling community established here in 1842.
