Travel to Castelsardo via the northwestern tip of Sardinia, passing through Porto Torres en route to the north coast.
Castelsardo is a fortified town founded in the 12th century by the Doria clan of Genoa, which ruled Sardinia for nearly two centuries. Today, it is a prime resort destination and a center for Sardinian crafts. You will explore the town on a guided walking tour, beginning with the restored castle. This is home to a museum showcasing traditional Sardinian weaving, from baskets and other everyday implements to the elaborate lobster traps used by local fishermen.
You will also visit the 16th-century Baroque cathedral, sporting a cupola adorned with majolica. The interior features a fragment of a 15th-century painting, Madonna with Angels, by the artist known simply as Maestro di Castelsardo.
Head to Chiesa di Santa Maria, a narrow church occupying a dramatic site below the castle. It is home to the 14th-century crucifix known as the Black Christ of Castelsardo.
Enjoy free time to shop for souvenirs, gifts and Castelsardo's famed weaving and basketry, and take some time to snap a photo of Elephant Rock -- a prehistoric tomb that has been eroded by the elements into the shape of an elephant's head.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
