Departing Belfast, you will travel to Larne and join the Antrim Coast Road for a three-hour drive. Gorgeous vistas of windswept coastline await, with unrivaled seascapes, towering cliffs, white-sand beaches, tranquil glens, lush forest parks and views of Scotland's Mull of Kintyre.
Stretch your legs at the Carrick A Rede rope bridge, spanning a 98-foot drop. The original bridge, built in 1755, had wide gaps and missing boards. Visitors today are delighted to discover that the old bridge has been replaced with a much safer (albeit less exciting) one. You will not cross the bridge but will stop at the viewpoint for a spectacular photo opportunity.
Pause for photos at Dunluce Castle, built in the 14th century, and there is time to enjoy lunch at a local hotel.
A ranger guides your visit to the Giant's Causeway, made up of some 40,000 massive black basalt columns that rose from the sea 50 - 60 million years ago. This remarkable landform draws people from far and wide to this corner of North Antrim. Legend says that a giant, Finn MacCool, built it so he could visit his giant-girlfriend in Scotland. Scientists offer a completely different explanation involving geological forces. The Visitor Center allows you to decide for yourself which explanation is most likely. Your imagination will travel with you as you follow the Causeway's stepping stones, leading either to the creative turbulence of a bygone volcanic age or into myths and legends of the past.
Return to Belfast via the inland route of Bushmills and Ballymena — a 90-minute drive.
Please note: Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel, and steps. The Causeway is very slippery when wet. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Dress warmly in layers with gloves, a scarf, and a hat; outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. Tour is non-refundable within 72 hours of the call date. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. Tour sequence may vary.
