Travel to Bertha's Beach -- a scenic sandy beach nestled along the beautiful coastline of the Falkland Islands, where ocean and wetland wildlife live and thrive in harmony. This Ramsar Site is named for the barque Bertha, shipwrecked here in 1952.
The island's main road network winds through the rugged Falklands landscape, punctuated by the unique geological stone runs that were cataloged by Charles Darwin. After approximately an hour, your vehicle turns off road for a 30-minute adventure across the flat lands. This terrain is home to some elusive waterfowl, such as the graceful black-neck swan, the Chiloe wigeon, the silver teal, speckled teal and silvery grebe.
Bertha's Beach itself boasts a Gentoo penguin colony with more than 800 birds. Additionally, more than 80 different flowering plants have been recorded at Bertha's Beach, five of which are endemic to the Falkland Islands. Among the many are the dog orchid, the yellow violet, Falkland lavender and the National Flower -- the pale maiden.
You will have approximately one hour at the beach to enjoy the wildlife and scenery before returning to Stanley.
Please note:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf.
