Departing the pier, begin your day with a brief panoramic drive through the city of Townsville. Pause for photos at Castle Hill before continuing past some of the well-preserved colonial-style buildings on your way out into the countryside. Your arrival at Billabong Sanctuary marks the true beginning of the fun—this 27-acre reserve of natural Queensland tropical bush if home to a wide variety of native mammals, birds and reptiles, with which you will have the opportunity to spend time today. You will be met at the entrance by a park ranger. Enjoy a guided tour and introduction to the many native animals living in the park. You may wish to have your picture taken with a cuddly koala or hold a wombat (at your own expense). If you’re feeling particularly brave, you will have the opportunity to handle a snake or crocodile as well. Following your walk, you’ll have free time to stroll at your own pace and mingle with the macropods (that’s kangaroos and wallabies to most of us). Take part in a handling or feeding show or simply relax by the pool before re-joining the coach for the return transfer to the ship.
