The tuk-tuk, an open-air rickshaw originally named for the sound of its engine, now features modern, quieter engines, making it one of the most enjoyable ways to explore.
Your journey begins with a visit to one of the best viewpoints west of the city, overlooking the stunning Cul-de-Sac Gallois, an enclosed bay with a single entry and exit point. As you head closer to downtown Antsiranana, you'll pause to take in the breathtaking panoramic views of Diego Suarez Bay and its iconic sugar-loaf mountain.
Within Antsiranana, formerly known as Diego Suarez until 1975, you'll be captivated by sights such as Independence Plaza. This significant landmark honors Madagascar’s independence from France, much like Foch Plaza. Here, you'll see the statue of Philibert Tsiranana, the "Father of Independence" and the country's first president.
